Zero Errors of
Consequence
Education.
Awareness.
Vigilance. |
The Vision Zero project
addresses the essential components of building a community
culture of safety. Vision Zero, at its core, is a symbol of
the medical transport community's safety awareness and
vigilance. Education, awareness and vigilance are used
collaboratively to enhance the safety culture
community-wide. The MedEvac Foundation is proud to
support the Vision Zero movement, and would like to extend
our special thanks to Vision Zero Chairman, Jonathan
Godfrey, for his tireless commitment to the cause! |
Family Grant
Fund
MedEvac
Foundation International offers the Family Grant Fund to benefit
families of crewmembers and patients killed or seriously injured
in air medical accidents. The MedEvac Foundation Family Grant Fund
will offer immediate assistance to families of air medical
crewmembers and their patients to cover unanticipated expenses
such as travel and lodging, food, childcare, a leave of absence
from work, medical or burial expenses, and crisis social services.
The purpose of the fund is to provide aid to families grieving a
loss and remove the immediate financial worry so they can take
care of their loved ones. The Family Grant Fund will also assist
air medical programs in caring for families following an accident.
MedEvac Foundation will begin administering aid to families in
late 2009 through participating AAMS air medical operators and
flight programs. Programs must have an accident plan with a family
assistance provision to be eligible for family grants.
"The effects of an accident are swift and devastating. Families
are often disorganized by grief, and surviving crewmembers and the
community as a whole, are thrown into shock. The Family Grant Fund
is one way to give back to newly-bereaved families by offering
assistance for immediate expenses such as travel, lodging, medical
and childcare costs. It's all about taking care of our own."
- Stacey Friedman (sister of Erin Reed)
Children's
Scholarship
MedEvac Foundation International
developed a higher education scholarship program to benefit the
children that have lost a parent in an air medical accident. The
first scholarship will be awarded during the 2009-2010 school
year. Applicants will be selected according to academic
achievement, financial need and community service. Candidates must
also be a dependent and/or an immediate relative of an air medical
flight crewmember or patient that lost their life in an air
medical accident; this includes parents, step-parents, legal
guardians, and grandparents.
A special
note of gratitude and recognition also goes to those who have
contributed a lead gift to launch this important initiative,
including EMS Sky Connect, PHI Air Medical Group and Paul Pitts
(in memory of his wife Patty Pitts).
International Forum
MedEvac Foundation
International believes that it is very important to link the
knowledge and experiences of air medical and critical care
transport professionals throughout the world so that we may better
understand, anticipate, and prepare for a challenging, gratifying
and safe future. Because of this the MedEvac Foundation held two
International Forums in 2008. International thought-leaders,
researchers and Chairman-level donors are invited to these events
to discuss international concerns in the air medical community.
Air Medicine:
Accessing the Future of Healthcare
MedEvac
Foundation International translated the award-winning public
policy white paper into 11 languages, including: Chinese, Czech,
Dutch, Farsi, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Portuguese,
Russian and Spanish.
Transport
Medicine Research Academy
Through a MedEvac Foundation
grant, Dr. MarkAlain Dery launched the first Transport Medicine
Research Academy at AMTC 2008. The goal is to have an annual or
bi-annual research conference at AMTC taught by the various
researchers within the HEMS community. The students are selected
by their program directors as an individual that will continue
to pursue in research oriented endeavors with the HEMS
community. The tuition for this class is free to the students.
Helicopter Shopping Video
The Hazards of Helicopter Shopping
video provides an education curriculum to inform requesting
agencies (fire departments, rescue squads, dispatch centers,
ICUs, law enforcement, emergency physicians and emergency
departments) about weather hazards, limitations to aviation
vehicles and how weather affects air medical operations. The
video explains why it is dangerous to "helicopter shop" during
inclement weather. Helicopter shopping is when a requesting
agency calls several air medical programs asking them to
transport a patient after other programs have been unable to fly
due to bad weather. For more information, please contact the
Foundation office at (703) 836-8732.
On the Fly Newsletter
MedEvac Foundation International
continues funding of the "On the Fly" electronic newsletter
featuring issues specific to aviation and patient safety. The
monthly newsletter provides links to the most up-to-date
articles on safety in the critical care transport community from
around the world.
